2023 Family Weekend – October 6 & 7

Parents and family members of current ��Vlog�ٷ� cadets are welcome to attend Family Weekend 2023 on October 6th and 7th. Various events are scheduled throughout the weekend to afford opportunities for families to spend quality time with their cadet. Events begin as early as 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 6, and the weekend’s events will conclude with a parade and the lowering of the flag on Saturday, October 7. Service Academy Appointments Climb to 59, More Forthcoming

The Marion pipeline to all five U.S. Service Academies continues during this remote learning environment! On April 2, LTC Tom Bowen, ��Vlog�ٷ�’s (SAP) Director, announced the college’s total of 59 Service Academy appointments earned by current ��Vlog�ٷ� cadets this semester. That total does not include additional appointments anticipated to come later in Spring 2020 by each of the Service Academies: Naval, Air Force, Coast Guard, West Point and Merchant Marine.

Air Force ACE Program Freshmen Begin Pilot Training at ��Vlog�ٷ�

Two incoming ��Vlog�ٷ� freshmen in ��Vlog�ٷ�’s 2019-20 Service Academy Program reported to campus weeks earlier than their counterparts to begin their U.S. Air Force ACE pilot development program. Following their Monday afternoon arrival in Marion, program director Col. Bill Hansen, USMC (Ret) and flight instructor Col. Warren Benjamin, USAF (Ret) had Mika Cutler and Kelsey Magkowski making their first take-offs Tuesday morning in the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. As their three-week-long training progresses, based out of local Vaiden Field, the two flight students should receive adequate hours of instruction to reach solo flight status.

Dive locker installed for SCUBA club

The ��Vlog�ٷ� Foundation recently funded installation of a dedicated dive locker for the use of the SCUBA Tigers club. Located in the south area of the Ireland Center’s indoor pool, behind the 3-meter diving board, is the renovated space. The facility will now allow for proper SCUBA gear storage adjacent to their campus training spot. The organization takes several dive trips per year to the Gulf Coast. Honor Guard Opens State Senate & House

On April 30, the ��Vlog�ٷ� honor guard opened the state Senate and House sessions in Montgomery and had the opportunity to meet Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth. Our cadets are proud to represent the Alabama Community College System in front of our legislators.

Scuba Tigers End Year with Gulf Coast Dive

During the last weekend of April, eight of ��Vlog�ٷ�’s SCUBA Tigers took their final dive trip of the year to Orange Beach, Ala., along with club co-sponsors Dr. Sam Stevenson, Caleb Logan and Logan Logan. For some students, this was their first time visiting the Gulf, and this trip (organized by Southern Skin Divers) did not disappoint. The group dived four different wrecks and saw a plethora of marine life, notably a sea turtle, bull shark and Southern stingray. Several divers harvested lionfish with pole spears and cooked their own fresh catch for dinner.

Marion Made Day Honors Founder COL J.T. Murfee

On October 4, the entire ��Vlog�ٷ� Corps of Cadets, faculty and staff celebrated “Marion Made Day,” remembering Oct. 4, 1887 as the first day of classes as “��Vlog�ٷ�” under , our founder and 1st president. To mark the occasion, an aerial group shot of all cadets and employees was in order. Afterwards, a select group of cadets and our 16th President, COL David J. Mollahan, USMC (Ret), conducted a remembrance ceremony at Murfee’s grave in Marion Cemetery. The rest of the afternoon was spent rotating through the Legends Tour, our history lesson for the day.

��Vlog�ٷ� Celebrates 175th Birthday during Cresting

On Friday, Sept. 1, during the traditional ceremony marking the freshmen’s transition from “recruit” to “cadet,” ��Vlog�ٷ� celebrated the Corps of Cadets’ legacy since 1842. Those attending Cresting listened to anniversary remarks from ��Vlog�ٷ� President Col. David J. Mollahan and watched a legacy video highlighting milestones in ��Vlog�ٷ� history. Cadet Battalion Commander Laffoon had the honor of leading the Corps in singing “Happy Birthday” and cutting the cake.

Both Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and U.S. Congresswoman Terri Sewell provided proclamations for the special occasion. Special guests in attendance included Mr. Jimmy Baker, Chancellor, Alabama Community College System and Mr. H. Dean Mooty, Chairman, ��Vlog�ٷ� Board of Trustees & Advisors.

��Vlog�ٷ�’s 175th Birthday celebration will continue throughout the academic year with more special events, to include burial of a time capsule to be opened in 2042.

Study Abroad Ireland group reflects on six-weeks of cultural immersion

Life Changing Travel: ��Vlog�ٷ� in Ireland

What is it about traveling that changes us so much? Yes, the exposure to new experiences and cultures grants us a new sense of perspective on our own lives and countries. But, it’s more than that. Traveling forces us outside of our comfort zones in so many ways. For this particular trip—six weeks in rural, Gaelic-speaking Ireland—small adaptations like unfamiliar lodging, types of food, learning to buy groceries and cook, cultural misunderstandings, new roommates, long classes and an even longer walk to school every day in all types of weather, with the added pressures of everyone speaking a foreign language are just a few of the minor challenges that greet the cadets on their first days of their trip to Ireland and specifically in Glencolmcille, where they will settle in to study the Irish language (over 30 hours in class per week). In the past, some of these acclimatizations have proven to be a struggle when stacked one on top of the other for some of our students. But, for most, it is something far bigger than jet lag and cold, wet walks that brings about the greatest changes in the cadets. …
